About Auckland’s Weather

Summer (December–February)

Auckland summers are warm and mostly sunny, with average highs around 23–24°C and occasional days pushing into the upper 20s. Humidity can be noticeable, particularly in January and February. Afternoon thunderstorms are possible but short-lived. This is the driest stretch of the year — ideal for outdoor activities, harbour sailing, and beach days across the Hauraki Gulf.

Autumn (March–May)

Autumn is often Auckland’s most settled season. Temperatures are still warm into April, cooling gradually through May. Rainfall increases slightly, but long dry spells remain common. Many locals consider March and April the best months in Auckland — warm, calm, and without the holiday crowds of summer.

Winter (June–August)

Auckland winters are mild by international standards but wet. Average highs sit around 14–15°C, rarely dropping below 8°C overnight in the city. Most rain arrives with fronts moving up from the south. Wind can be significant, particularly in the exposed western suburbs and coastal areas. Snow in the city is effectively unheard of, though the ranges east of Auckland occasionally see light dustings on the highest peaks.

Spring (September–November)

Spring weather in Auckland is famously variable — sunny one morning, bucketing rain by afternoon. Temperatures climb steadily from September onward, with November often feeling like an early summer day. Wind picks up as competing weather systems fight it out, making conditions changeable at short notice. Pack a light layer regardless of the morning forecast.

Wind

Auckland’s geography — a narrow isthmus between two harbours — funnels wind predictably. Southwesterlies arrive ahead of fronts and can be gusty. The Waitematā Harbour is particularly exposed during southwesterly conditions. Northerlies in summer bring humidity and often precede unsettled spells. Local sailors and fisherfolk pay close attention to the daily wind forecast.

What Visitors Say

“Even in winter Auckland is pleasant enough — just bring a waterproof jacket. The harbour views are actually more dramatic when the clouds roll in.”

Does it rain a lot in Auckland?
Auckland receives around 1,240 mm of rainfall per year, spread fairly evenly across the seasons. Winter is wettest; summer and early autumn are driest. Rain often comes in short, sharp bursts rather than prolonged grey days.

How hot does Auckland get in summer?
Average summer highs are around 23–24°C, with occasional days reaching 28–30°C. Nights are warm, typically staying above 15°C through January and February.

Does Auckland ever get snow?
Snow in Auckland is extremely rare. The last significant snowfall in the city itself was in 1939. Light snow occasionally appears on the ranges east of Auckland (the Hunua Ranges) during very cold snaps, but it rarely lasts.

What should I pack for Auckland in winter?
A waterproof jacket and light layers. Temperatures rarely drop below 8°C in the city at night. You won’t need a heavy winter coat, but waterproofing is essential.

Is Auckland weather similar to Sydney or Brisbane?
Auckland is cooler and wetter than both. Auckland’s temperate oceanic climate means milder summers and winters than Sydney, with significantly more annual rainfall spread more evenly across the year.
