The Gulf Harbour Car Park freedom camping site is on the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, about 45 minutes north of Auckland, in the Gulf Harbour marina precinct. It’s one of Auckland Council’s designated freedom camping areas — a flat, sealed car park next to the marina with views across the Hauraki Gulf and access to the marina’s facilities. Self-contained vehicles only. It fills on summer weekends and the area is popular with boaties and cyclists as well as freedom campers.

The Site
The Gulf Harbour freedom camping area is a designated car park section adjacent to the Gulf Harbour Marina — Auckland’s largest marina by berth count. The setting is pleasant: views across to Waiheke Island and the Hauraki Gulf, a working marina atmosphere, and ready access to the marina’s café and toilet facilities. The surface is sealed, which is useful in wet weather. There’s no on-site power or water connection — this is a self-contained site in the full sense. Dogs on a lead are permitted.
Gulf Harbour Marina and Village
The marina has a small café, a ship chandlery and fuel dock — basic but functional. The marina village gets lively on summer weekends with boat owners coming and going. Paraoa Brewing Company is about 5 minutes by car and has a tap room and restaurant open for lunch and dinner, making it a good dinner option for campers. The marina area itself has a pleasant harbour-side walkway suitable for an evening stroll.
Shakespear Regional Park
Shakespear Regional Park is at the tip of the Whangaparāoa Peninsula, about 10 minutes by car from Gulf Harbour. The park has several beaches (Te Haruhi Bay, Okoromai Bay, Army Bay), a predator-fenced native wildlife sanctuary, and walking tracks through farmland and coastal pohutukawa forest. It’s an excellent complement to a night at Gulf Harbour — arrive, set up, walk Shakespear in the afternoon, spend the night, and head back the following morning.
Auckland Council Freedom Camping Rules
Auckland Council requires that all vehicles freedom camping at designated sites are certified self-contained — this means the vehicle must have its own toilet and waste holding facilities, certified to NZMCA standards or equivalent. Non-certified vehicles cannot freedom camp at this site. The maximum stay is two consecutive nights, after which campers must move on for at least two nights before returning. Rangers patrol designated sites and issue infringement notices for non-compliance.
