Narrow Neck Beach is the longer of Devonport’s two main beaches, running along the northern side of the Devonport Peninsula from Cheltenham northwards. It’s about 20 minutes’ walk from the Devonport ferry terminal — slightly further than Cheltenham, which means it sees fewer visitors and is often pleasantly quiet. The beach is wide, sandy and exposed to the north with views to the outer Hauraki Gulf and Rangitoto. It’s a good choice when you want more space or a longer beach walk than Cheltenham provides.

Swimming Conditions
Narrow Neck is more exposed to north and north-east winds than Cheltenham, which sits further around the peninsula. On calm days the swimming is excellent — clear water, sandy bottom, good visibility. On days with a strong north-easterly, the beach can be choppy and less suitable for weaker swimmers. The beach shelves more steeply than Cheltenham in places. Surf Life Saving NZ patrols in summer — swim between the flags. Water quality is monitored by Auckland Council and results are published weekly online. The beach is generally clean; avoid swimming after heavy rainfall.
Walking the Beach
Narrow Neck is well-suited to beach walking — the long, flat stretch of sand is easy underfoot and extends further than Cheltenham. At low tide the sand is wide enough for a comfortable walk the full length of the beach. The northern end of Narrow Neck connects to further coastal walking towards Bayswater and the inner harbour. Walking south from Narrow Neck, you reach Cheltenham Beach in about 10 minutes. The full Devonport loop — ferry wharf, North Head, Cheltenham, Narrow Neck and back — makes a satisfying 3–4 hour half-day walk.
Combining with Cheltenham and North Head
Narrow Neck works best combined with Cheltenham and North Head as part of a full Devonport day. The standard loop from the ferry wharf: walk through the village to North Head (volcanic cone, historic tunnels) → walk to Cheltenham Beach (15 min) → continue along the coast to Narrow Neck (10 min from Cheltenham) → return to the village via residential streets. This covers all of Devonport’s main attractions in a comfortable half-day without retracing your steps.
What Visitors Say
“Narrow Neck is much quieter than Cheltenham — we had a long stretch of beach almost to ourselves on a Sunday morning. The walk from the ferry through the village is pleasant. Bring a picnic — no food options at the beach itself.”
