Auckland Botanic Gardens in Manurewa, south Auckland, covers 64 hectares of cultivated gardens, native plantings, and natural forest — and much of it is best explored on foot. The gardens have a network of walking tracks ranging from short loops through themed garden sections to longer routes into the native bush reserve that borders the site. Entry is free, parking is free, and the gardens are open every day. It’s a genuine walking destination that holds up well in all seasons — different plants and flowers take centre stage at different times of year, and the native bush section is quiet and green year-round.

About the Gardens

Auckland Botanic Gardens opened in 1982 and has grown into one of the most significant plant collections in New Zealand, with more than 10,000 plant species across 64 hectares. The gardens are divided into themed sections — roses, dahlias, herbs, rhododendrons, New Zealand natives, and more — connected by a network of paths and tracks. Beyond the cultivated sections, the southern end of the property includes a regenerating native bush reserve that offers a different, quieter experience.

The gardens also serve as a conservation centre, holding collections of endangered New Zealand plant species as part of national preservation efforts. Several of the native plantings include species that are rare or threatened in the wild.

Walking Tracks

The inner garden paths are suitable for all abilities, mostly flat and well-surfaced — good for pushchairs and wheelchairs through most of the cultivated areas. A clear main path loops through the major garden sections and can be covered in around 45–60 minutes at a relaxed pace.

The native bush reserve tracks on the southern side offer a more natural walking experience — rougher underfoot and quieter, with good bird life including tūī, kererë and grey warbler. These tracks take 30–60 minutes and are best in sturdy shoes and are not suitable for pushchairs.

A Heritage Rose Garden Walk and a Rhododendron Dell circuit are particularly popular in spring. The New Zealand Plant Collection walk is worthwhile year-round for those interested in native species.

What Visitors Say

“We spent about two hours wandering through the gardens and didn’t feel like we’d seen everything — there’s more here than you expect. The native bush section at the back is peaceful and quite different from the main gardens. The café is good and the whole place is free. Highly recommend as a half-day outing.”

“Beautiful place to walk in autumn when the leaves are changing colour. Very well maintained. We went on a weekday and it was quiet enough to feel peaceful. The endangered plant collection is interesting if you take time to read the labels.”
