About Te Ara Tahuna

Te Ara Tahuna follows the shoreline of the Ōrewa Estuary, a broad tidal inlet that extends inland from Ōrewa Beach. The loop begins at the large open space of Western Reserve and travels along both sides of the estuary before returning to the start. Several bridges provide crossings over the main channel and smaller tidal arms, offering changing views of the water and surrounding reserves.

The estuary environment features tidal flats that attract wading birds at low tide and a fringe of mangroves along the inner channels. Open grassy areas at Western Reserve contrast with the more enclosed sections near the water. The path is well maintained, clearly signposted and suitable year-round for a range of users.

Western Reserve itself contains the Ōrewa Skate Park, a basketball court, picnic facilities and the Ōrewa Estuary Arts Centre. The centre hosts cultural events and offers coffee when open. The reserve also provides direct access to the start of the estuary path and connections to the Ōrewa Beachfront Path.

Along the Way and Extensions

Roughly halfway around the loop the path passes through Millwater, a planned residential area with a town centre containing cafes, seating and toilets. This makes a convenient rest or refreshment stop for those completing the full circuit.

At the northern end the route connects with Ōrewa Beach, allowing an easy extension along the sand or a swim in the estuary. Ōrewa township, with its additional cafes and shops, lies a short distance from the beach end of the path.

What Visitors Often Say

Walkers and cyclists appreciate the flat, sealed surface and scenic estuary views. Many families note it is easy for children and prams, with good facilities at the start and a useful midpoint stop in Millwater. Some mention the path passes residential areas and can feel busy with local users at peak times.

Reviewers often highlight the bridges, birdlife at low tide and the option to combine the loop with a beach visit. The route is described as pleasant and well maintained, suitable for a relaxed outing or regular exercise.
