About Maraetai

Maraetai is one of the main beaches on the Pohutukawa Coast — the stretch of east Auckland coast running from Beachlands through Maraetai, Kawakawa Bay and toward the Firth of Thames. The beach is named for the Māori word meaning “open sea” or “vast ocean view”, and it does indeed have one of the more open Hauraki Gulf outlooks — across to Waiheke, Ponui Island and the Coromandel coast in the distance. The Maraetai Surf Life Saving Club is a long-established community fixture and patrols the beach in summer.

Swimming and Conditions

Maraetai’s sheltered position behind the surrounding headlands and Waiheke gives it consistently calm swimming conditions — protected from the prevailing south-westerlies and the open-coast swells that hit the west coast beaches. Mid–high tide is best for swimming depth. The water warms reasonably well in summer (~19–22°C) and the long flat sandy gradient suits families with young swimmers. Check Auckland Council’s Safeswim service before swimming, particularly after heavy rain when stormwater can affect quality.

Combining With the Pohutukawa Coast

The Pohutukawa Coast — the long stretch of road east from Maraetai through Kawakawa Bay — is one of east Auckland’s most pleasant scenic drives, particularly in December when the pōhutukawa lining the coast flower red. From Maraetai you can extend the day with the drive along to Kawakawa Bay (10 min), the Hunua Falls (40 min south), or back via Clevedon for a country-village stop. The Beachlands–Maraetai village strip has a handful of cafes and a Saturday morning market in summer.
