The Cascades in the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park west of Auckland is one of the region’s best waterfall walks — a track through mature kauri and podocar rainforest passing a series of cascades, with swimming holes at lower pools. Also known as Te Piringa, the Cascade Track is around 4 kilometres and takes about 4 hours including time for photos and swimming stops. It’s one of those walks where the journey matters as much as the destination. Kauri dieback cleaning stations are mandatory — clean all footwear before entering.

About the Walk
The Cascade Track winds through some of the best lowland rainforest in the Waitākere Ranges — mature kauri, tree ferns, nikau palms, and a dense understorey that feels genuinely primeval. The track follows the Cascade Stream, crossing and recrossing it as it descends through a series of small waterfalls and pools. The main cascade — a long, multi-tiered waterfall — is the highlight, but the surrounding forest and swimming holes in the lower pools are reason enough for the walk.
Arataki Visitor Centre is the natural base for this walk — the centre has toilets, information panels on the Ranges’ natural and cultural history, and the mandatory kauri dieback cleaning stations. Kauri dieback (Phytophthora agathidicida) is present throughout the Waitākere Ranges; cleaning boots and gear before entering and leaving the bush is not optional — it is a legal requirement under conservation rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I start the Cascades Walk?
From Arataki Visitor Centre on Scenic Drive in the Waitākere Ranges. The visitor centre has parking, toilets, and kauri dieback cleaning stations.
Can I swim at the Cascades?
Yes — there are swimming holes at the lower cascade pools. The water is cold and clear; conditions vary with rainfall. Always check Safeswim after heavy rain.
Do I really need to clean my boots?
Yes — this is a legal requirement under conservation regulations. Kauri dieback is spread through soil on footwear and gear. Cleaning stations are at Arataki and at track entrances. Use them every time, going in and out.
Are there longer walks available?
Yes. The Upper/Lower Kauri combination extends to 9 km, and various loop tracks up to 15+ km are available for experienced walkers. Check Auckland Council for current track status before extending your route.
