Cornwall Park and the adjoining One Tree Hill Domain together form one of Auckland’s most significant urban parks — roughly 180 hectares of pastoral land, volcanic cone, and old trees sitting just 5 kilometres from the city centre. The park is free to enter, genuinely spacious, and unusual in that sheep still graze across its rolling slopes. It’s the sort of place that works for a quiet walk, a family picnic, or for anyone wanting to understand the city’s Māori and colonial history in a single visit.

About Cornwall Park and One Tree Hill Domain
The park divides into two connected areas: Cornwall Park (pastoral trust land managed by the Cornwall Park Trust) and the One Tree Hill Domain (public council land including the volcanic cone of Maungakiekie itself). In practice they feel continuous — you walk between them freely — but the management arrangement means slightly different rules and opening hours.
The most distinctive thing about Cornwall Park is the sheep. A working flock grazes across the slopes, giving the park an unusual rural character rare in a city park. The Cornwall Park Loop Path runs approximately 3km around the main park and is flat enough for most fitness levels. Mature trees line the paths throughout — over 350 species are represented in the collection — and the lime tree avenue near the main entrance is particularly striking in autumn.
Acacia Cottage, near the main entrance, is Auckland’s oldest surviving wooden building, built in 1841 by Sir John Logan Campbell — the same man who later gifted the land to the city. The cottage has been relocated from its original site but remains structurally intact and is open to visitors.
Stardome Observatory operates within the Domain. It runs planetarium shows for the public, with tickets from around NZ$15. Booking ahead is recommended for popular sessions.
Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill
The volcanic cone at the centre of the Domain — Maungakiekie — rises to about 182 metres and offers clear views across Auckland to both harbours on a good day. The walk to the summit takes 20–30 minutes from the main entrance at an easy pace. At the top stands the obelisk erected in memory of the Māori people of Tāmaki Makaurau, which also marks the grave of Sir John Logan Campbell.
The hill was one of the largest and most intensively occupied pā sites in New Zealand. Extensive terracing, storage pits, and earthworks are still clearly visible across the slopes — the scale of the former settlement is striking once you know to look for it. The site holds deep significance for multiple Auckland iwi.
The “one tree” the hill is named for was a lone tōtara that once stood at the summit. It was felled by activists in 2000 and removed in 2016. A grove of young replacement trees has since been planted near the summit.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cornwall Park free to enter?
Yes — Cornwall Park and One Tree Hill Domain are both free. Parking is also free. The Stardome Observatory charges separately for planetarium shows (from ~NZ$15).
What are the opening hours?
Cornwall Park is open 7am–8pm in summer and 7am–6pm in winter. One Tree Hill Domain (including the summit) is open 24 hours.
How long is the walk to the summit?
About 20–30 minutes from the main entrance at a comfortable pace. The final section involves a sustained climb. The summit road is also open to vehicles during park hours.
Can I bring my dog?
Dogs are allowed on a leash only throughout the park. The working sheep flock means off-leash dogs are not permitted anywhere in Cornwall Park or the Domain.
Why is it called One Tree Hill?
A lone tōtara once stood at the summit. Activists felled it in 2000 and it was removed in 2016. A grove of replacement trees has been planted near the top, though it will be decades before they reach the scale of the original.
What is the Māori significance of Maungakiekie?
Maungakiekie was one of the largest pā sites in New Zealand, home to thousands of people at its peak. The terracing and earthworks across the slopes are the remains of that occupation. The obelisk at the summit honours the Māori people of Tāmaki Makaurau and marks the grave of Cornwall Park benefactor Sir John Logan Campbell.
What is Acacia Cottage?
Built in 1841, it’s Auckland’s oldest surviving wooden building. Sir John Logan Campbell built it near the current Customs Street waterfront; it was later moved to Cornwall Park. You’ll find it near the main Green Lane West entrance.
