Cornwall Park and the adjoining Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill Domain form one of Auckland’s most significant urban parks — 270 hectares of volcanic landscape, working farmland, native trees, and heritage buildings just 6 kilometres from the city centre. The park surrounds the 182-metre volcanic cone of Maungakiekie, one of the most important ancestral maunga in Tāmaki Makaurau. You can walk to the summit in about 20 minutes, take longer loop tracks around the domain, or simply wander through the park’s open lawns, past historic Acacia Cottage, and into the olive grove. It’s free, well-maintained, and genuinely one of the best parks in the city.

About the Park
Cornwall Park was gifted to the people of Auckland by Sir John Logan Campbell in 1901, and is managed by the Cornwall Park Trust Board independently of Auckland Council. The two parks — Cornwall Park and the One Tree Hill Domain — function together as a single open space covering about 270 hectares. Within that, you’ll find a working sheep and cattle farm, extensive tree plantings including a notable olive grove, and a network of walking paths.
Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill is the volcanic cone at the heart of the domain. It was one of the largest and most populated Māori pā sites in New Zealand before European settlement, and remains deeply significant to local iwi. The summit is topped by a distinctive obelisk — a memorial to the Māori people of New Zealand — and the views from the top extend across both Auckland harbours on a clear day.
Walking at Cornwall Park
The main draw is the summit walk up Maungakiekie — a 20-minute walk up well-maintained paths from the base of the cone, with 360-degree views of Auckland and both harbours from the top. The paths are easy and accessible for most fitness levels; the eastern side of the park is more gradual, while the western face is steeper.
The Cornwall Park Loop Path is a longer circuit around the park boundary, taking in the olive grove, farm areas, and heritage buildings. Every Saturday morning at 8am there is a free Parkrun — a timed 5km run starting from the Band Rotunda, welcoming all pace levels.
Heritage Highlights
Acacia Cottage, built in 18841, is the oldest surviving wooden building in Auckland — it sits within the park and can be viewed daily between 7am and dusk. The Huia Lodge Discovery Hub nearby provides information about the park’s history. There is also an observatory near Manukau Road that offers night sky viewing on select evenings.
What Visitors Say
“Cornwall Park is one of my favourite places in Auckland. Walking up One Tree Hill for the view is a must — the whole city spreads out in front of you. The farm animals are a hit with kids, the café is good, and the olive grove is a lovely spot to sit. Free to visit and always well-kept.”
“Did the Parkrun here on a Saturday — great atmosphere and a scenic route. Stayed for a coffee at the café afterwards. The summit views are genuinely impressive for a park so close to the city. Recommend arriving early on summer weekends as parking fills up.”
