Fairy Falls in the Waitākere Ranges is one of the more dramatic waterfall walks within an hour of central Auckland — a tiered falls dropping into multiple pools accessed via a 30–45 minute bush walk through native rainforest. The descent to the base is steep, with stairs and a viewing platform, in a setting that feels far more remote than its city-fringe location.

About Fairy Falls
Fairy Falls is a tiered waterfall in the Waitākere Stream catchment — a series of drops over basalt steps that create multiple pools at different levels. The walk in from Mountain Road descends through mature kauri-podocarp forest, with the falls audible long before they come into view. The track includes substantial timber stairs on the steepest sections, with a viewing platform at the base giving the best vantage point. The setting feels genuinely remote — surrounded by tall native bush with no sounds beyond the falls and the forest.
The Walk and Descent
From the Mountain Road car park, the track follows a ridge before descending sharply toward the Waitākere Stream — a 30–45 minute one-way walk with significant elevation change. The descent uses timber stairs in several places, and the return climb back to the car park is the steepest part of the day. Bring proper footwear and allow time for the return. The track is well-formed and signposted but should not be underestimated; it’s a moderate rather than easy walk.
Kauri-Dieback Hygiene
The Waitākere Ranges have been heavily affected by kauri dieback and many tracks were closed under a rāhui placed in 2018. Fairy Falls track has re-opened with upgraded boardwalk and mandatory hygiene station use at the trailhead. Clean all soil from boot soles, scrub thoroughly, then spray with disinfectant — both entering and leaving. Stay on the formed track and boardwalk throughout; never step off into kauri root zones. Dogs are not permitted in the Waitākere Ranges.
