About Gribblehirst Park

Gribblehirst Park occupies land formed by lava flows from Maungawhau / Mt Eden around 20,000 years ago. The Gribble and Hirst families donated the site to the Mt Albert Borough in 1928. Rocks were cleared and the swamp drained before the park officially opened on 28 March 1931. A remnant lava rock forest remains as a Significant Ecological Area, supporting insects and birds, with a boardwalk and trail for visitors.

The park’s playground is split across levels on the natural slope, providing varied play experiences for different ages. Equipment includes slides, swings, a climbing wall, balance rope and flying fox. A barbecue area, picnic tables and toilets sit nearby, supporting longer visits. Three rose garden beds add colour near the Aroha Avenue entrance, while mature trees offer shade across the grounds.

The sports field hosts rugby and other activities, with the Eden Rugby Club maintaining clubrooms on site. The Gribblehirst Community Hub occupies former bowling club buildings and runs community programmes, classes and events. Additional groups include a men’s shed, cycle space and petanque club.

Access and Parking

Vehicle access and parking are available from Sandringham Road and Aroha Avenue via Cabbage Tree Swamp Drive, with two accessible spaces near the Community Hub. Pedestrian entrances exist from Begbie Place and Kenneth and Thanet avenues. The Sandringham Road entrance is relatively flat, while others can be narrow and steep. A lit central footpath runs along Cabbage Tree Swamp Drive. Buses stop at the Sandringham Road entrance.

History and Cultural Context

Iwi knew the area as Ngā Anawai, the watery caves. Earlier swamp conditions featured cabbage trees, giving the internal road its name. Diatomite extraction occurred historically before the land became park. The site now preserves both recreational and ecological values within the urban setting.

What Visitors Often Say

Families appreciate the tiered playground layout that separates play areas for different ages and the flying fox as a highlight for older children. The combination of equipment, barbecue facilities and nearby toilets supports relaxed half-day visits.

Locals value the bush trail through the lava rock forest for a short nature walk and note the rose gardens and mature trees as pleasant spots for a break. The sports field and community hub add to the park’s role as a neighbourhood gathering place.
