Lake Wainamu: Best Swimming Spot in the Waitākere Ranges

Lake Wainamu behind Bethells Beach is one of Auckland’s most spectacular freshwater swimming spots — a dune-fringed lake set among towering black-sand dunes, reached by a 15-minute walk from the Bethells road end. Warm clear water, sandy bottom, and a setting that feels far more remote than its 45-minute drive from central Auckland.

About Lake Wainamu

Lake Wainamu is a dune-impounded freshwater lake — formed when wind-blown sand dunes built up behind a small valley near the Bethells / Te Henga coast and trapped the freshwater inflow. The result is a clear sheltered lake surrounded on three sides by towering black-sand dunes (“the Sahara of the west coast”) and fringed with native flax and rushes. The walk in through the dunes from the Bethells road end is itself a highlight — the dunes have appeared in many film shoots and the route emerges suddenly onto the lake with a dramatic reveal.

Swimming Conditions

Lake Wainamu is one of the warmer freshwater swimming spots in west Auckland — sheltered from wind by the surrounding dunes, with a sandy bottom and gentle depth gradient. Water temperatures reach 20–24°C in late summer, warmer than the open sea at adjacent Bethells. The lake is large enough to swim properly without feeling cramped. No lifeguard service — swim within your ability and supervise children. Best swimming areas are along the eastern shore near the walk-in track exit.

Combining With Bethells Beach

The standard day-out combines Lake Wainamu and Bethells Beach (Te Henga): drive to Bethells, walk in through the dunes to Wainamu for a fresh-water swim and picnic, then walk back out and finish on the surf beach. The two contrasting environments — wild Tasman surf at Bethells, sheltered freshwater at Wainamu — make this one of west Auckland’s most rewarding half-days. Take everything you need with you (no shops at either location). The dune walk is exposed, so sun protection in summer and warm layers in winter.
