Maraetai Beach Auckland: Calm East Coast Swimming 45 Minutes from the City

Maraetai Beach is a sheltered east coast swimming beach on the Tāmaki Strait, about 45 minutes and 24 kilometres east of Auckland’s city centre. It’s the kind of spot that regulars guard carefully — calm, clear water that Safeswim lists as having a history of excellent quality (no longer requiring regular monitoring), a large foreshore reserve with playground and barbecues, and far fewer people than the eastern bays beaches closer to the CBD.

About the Beach

Maraetai Beach faces southeast across the Tāmaki Strait, sheltered by the Beachlands-Maraetai peninsula. The water is calm and clear — more consistently swimmable than the exposed west coast surf beaches, and less congested than the eastern bays along Tamaki Drive. The water quality history here is genuinely good: Safeswim has rated it green (excellent) and notes the beach is no longer routinely monitored due to its consistent record.

The large reserve behind the beach has a playground, barbecue facilities, and picnic tables. Maraetai Park is across Maraetai Drive and provides additional green space. The small Maraetai village has a café and limited local services. The drive out via Whitford is scenic and takes in some of Auckland’s rural eastern countryside.
