About Omana Regional Park

Omana is one of the smaller Auckland regional parks but one of the better-located for an east-Auckland day-out — a 40-hectare farm park with grazing pasture rolling down to a sheltered sandy beach on the Hauraki Gulf. The park is part of Auckland’s wider regional parks network managed by Auckland Council, and it’s particularly popular for family swim-and-picnic outings combining the beach with the surrounding grass picnic areas and farm walking tracks.

Swimming Conditions

Omana’s beach is sheltered behind the Pohutukawa Coast headlands and faces the Hauraki Gulf — protected from prevailing south-westerlies and the open-coast swells. Conditions are typically calm and family-friendly. Mid–high tide gives the best swimming depth; low tide exposes a long flat sandy stretch suitable for walking. The water warms reasonably well in summer (~19–22°C). Check Auckland Council’s Safeswim service before swimming after rain.

Beyond the Beach

The wider park has several short farm walking tracks across the grazing paddocks — easy walks suitable for families, with sheep and cattle visible (and sometimes coming up to walkers). Picnic tables, BBQs and grass areas around the beach make the park practical for full-day visits. The Pohutukawa Coast Road continues east from the park to Maraetai (5 min drive), making it easy to combine multiple Hauraki Gulf beaches in one outing.
