Te Ara Tahuna: Ōrewa Estuary Walkway Guide

Te Ara Tahuna — the Ōrewa Estuary Walkway — is a 7.5km sealed loop on the Hibiscus Coast, about 40 minutes north of central Auckland. It circles the Ōrewa Estuary on a wide, flat path equally suited to walkers, runners, cyclists and prams — the entire route is sealed and accessible, with five bridges crossing the estuary and its channels at various points. The midpoint of the loop passes through Millwater, a modern suburb with cafes and shops, making it easy to break the walk with a rest stop.

The route connects the natural estuary environment with the Ōrewa township, passing through open reserves with playgrounds, sports fields and public artwork near the start, and running close to the water where the estuary’s tidal channels meet the mangrove fringe. It’s well-signposted, well-maintained and genuinely pleasant year-round — a good option for families visiting the Hibiscus Coast or anyone wanting a flat, easy loop away from the city.

About the Walk

Te Ara Tahuna follows the Ōrewa Estuary — a broad tidal inlet that stretches inland from Ōrewa Beach. The walk begins at Western Reserve, a large open park at the southernend of the estuary, and circuits the water on both sides before returning to the start. Five bridges cross the estuary and its channels at various points, giving the walk variety and views across the water from different angles throughout the loop.

The estuary itself is worth slowing down for. Wading birds use the tidal flats at low tide, and the mangrove fringe along the inner channels contrasts with the open grassy reserves at the start and finish. The Ōrewa Estuary Arts Centre sits close to the Western Reserve at the start of the walk — worth a visit if it’s open, with coffee available and regular cultural events.

Along the Way

Roughly halfway around the loop, the path passes through Millwater — a planned residential suburb with a town centre including cafes and food options, toilets and seating areas. It’s a natural rest point for those walking the full loop. From Millwater, the second half of the route follows the estuary’s eastern side back towards Ōrewa Beach and the starting reserve.

The walk connects to Ōrewa Beach at the northern end — adding a beach walk or swim is an easy extension. Ōrewa township with its cafes and shops is a short distance from the beach end of the estuary, making a full morning or afternoon out of the walk straightforward.
