Karamatura Stream Huia: Waterfall Swimming Holes in the Waitākere Ranges

Karamatura Stream runs through a forested gully in the Huia area of the Waitākere Ranges Regional Park, offering some of the most accessible waterfall swimming in west Auckland. The 3.5-kilometre loop track passes several swimming holes along the stream before reaching a waterfall with a deep plunge pool — a 15-minute spur off the main loop. The water is very cold year-round, so most visitors save the swim for a warm summer day after the walk has generated some heat. Kauri dieback cleaning stations must be used at the start and end of the track.

About the Karamatura Track

The track is accessed from Huia, a small settlement at the western end of the Manukau Harbour. To get there, head west on Huia Road until you reach the settlement, pass through on the one-way bridge, and look for the Karamatura Carpark on the left a few hundred metres past the bridge. The carpark can fill quickly on summer weekends — arriving early is advisable.

The loop follows Karamatura Stream through native bush, crossing the stream several times via footbridges and offering shallow swimming holes at various points. The water runs clear and cold. There are some steep sections with stairs, particularly in the upper part of the track.

The Waterfall Swim

From the top of the main loop, a spur track leads to the waterfall — allow an extra 15 minutes each way. The spur involves slippery roots and rocks, so appropriate footwear matters here. The plunge pool at the base of the falls is the deepest swimming spot on the whole track. It is a genuinely cold swim but one of the more rewarding waterfall pools accessible in west Auckland without a major tramp. The stream swimming holes on the way up are a good alternative for those who prefer shallower, calmer water.

What Visitors Say

“Karamatura is one of those spots that locals know about and visitors almost never find. The walk itself is beautiful — proper native bush, stream crossings, good birdlife. The swimming hole at the falls is freezing but that’s the point after 90 minutes of walking in summer. Go early on weekends — the carpark is small.” — visitor account, NZ Adventure Guide
