Pakiri Beach Auckland: Swimming, Horse Riding and What to Know

Pakiri Beach stretches along the Rodney coastline about 90 kilometres north of Auckland — a long, largely uncrowded stretch of sand that is particularly good for families who want space. It is one of those beaches that rewards making the drive: swimming, surfing, and kayaking are all possible, and the long-established Pakiri Beach Horse Rides operation gives visitors a way to experience the beach and surrounding farmland on horseback. Combined with a stop at nearby Goat Island Marine Reserve, Pakiri makes for a full day out of Auckland.

About Pakiri Beach

Pakiri is a small community beach settlement that has managed to remain relatively unhurried despite being a genuine destination beach. The sand is wide and the beach is long enough that even on busy summer weekends there is room to spread out. The ocean here is open and unprotected, which means there can be surf and the conditions should be respected — it is unpatrolled, and the nearest lifeguard services are further south.

The car park, changing rooms, and toilet facilities are located just past the Top 10 Holiday Park at the northern end of the main beach access road. From there it is a short walk to the beach.

Horse Trekking at Pakiri

Pakiri Beach Horse Rides is one of the longer-running horse trekking operations in the Auckland region, offering options that suit complete beginners through to experienced riders. Treks range from one hour to a full day, covering the beach, native bush, and surrounding farmland. Full day treks include a packed lunch and the option to swim with your horse in the lake — a genuinely memorable experience. Sundown treks are also available for something different in the late afternoon.

The operation can be booked directly through the Pakiri Beach Horse Rides website. Riders of all ages and experience levels are catered for, and horses are matched to riders’ experience.

What Visitors Say

“Pakiri is what Auckland beaches used to be like before everything got built up. Long, wide, not too many people. The horse riding is the reason most people make the drive but the beach alone is worth it — just come prepared for a proper open-coast swim rather than a sheltered harbour paddle.” — travel writer, NZ Adventure Guide
