Wenderholm Regional Park Auckland: Swimming Beach and What to Know

Wenderholm Regional Park sits at the mouth of the Pūhoi River on the east coast, about 35 minutes north of Auckland city. It is one of the region’s most pleasant family swimming destinations — nearly 900 metres of sandy beach with calm, relatively safe swimming conditions, backed by large grassed picnic areas and lined with pohutukawa trees. The park also has native forest walks, a riverside camping area, and access to the Pūhoi River for kayaking. It is the kind of place where a morning swim, a picnic lunch, and a short walk can fill a day without any effort.

About Wenderholm

Wenderholm is one of Auckland’s oldest regional parks. The beach is the main draw — a long stretch of calm water with a gentle sandy slope that creates safe conditions for swimming, even for families with younger children. The pohutukawa trees along the shoreline provide excellent shade in summer, and the large grassed areas between the trees and the beach make it one of the best picnic settings in the Auckland region.

The one hazard to be aware of is the tidal current at the mouth of the Pūhoi River, which enters the sea at the southern end of the beach. The current here can be surprisingly strong and should be avoided — danger signs mark the area. The rest of the beach is generally calm and safe for swimming.

Walks and the Pūhoi River

The park has a series of native forest walking tracks that climb the headland between the Waiwera and Pūhoi Rivers, rewarding the effort with views back down the coast and up the river valleys. The tracks are moderately graded and take around one to two hours to complete. For those who prefer time on the water, the Pūhoi River is accessible for kayaking — a popular way to explore the estuary environment from a different perspective.

What Visitors Say

“Wenderholm is genuinely one of the nicest beach picnic spots near Auckland. The pohutukawa trees, the calm water, the length of beach — it has a feeling of space that closer-in beaches don’t. The changing rooms are a bonus. Just stay away from the river mouth end if you’re swimming.” — visitor account, NZ travel blog
