Tāpapakanga Regional Park is a coastal farm park on the western shores of the Firth of Thames, about 70 kilometres south-east of Auckland near Orere Point. It’s the most remote of the Auckland regional parks — the drive alone takes over an hour — but the combination of a pohutukawa-lined swimming beach, coastal walking tracks, a historic homestead, and beachfront camping makes it worth the trip for those willing to go the distance.

About the Park
Tāpapakanga Regional Park covers roughly 370 hectares of coastal farmland on the Firth of Thames. The park has a rich Māori and European history: Māori settlement in the area dates back centuries, and the European-era Ashby homestead — a historic farm building — still stands within the park and is visible on the walking tracks.
The beach faces west across the Firth of Thames. At low tide it extends considerably, offering a long foreshore walk; at high tide the water comes in closer and the swimming conditions are generally calmer and more suitable for families. The beach is framed by mature pohutukawa trees along the foreshore.
Walking Tracks
The park has around 14.7 kilometres of marked walking tracks, covering a range of distances and terrain types. The shortest option is the Historic Loop (1.5km, approximately 30 minutes), which visits the Ashby homestead and connects to the beach. The Tāpapakanga Coastal Walk is the longest track (7.5km, approximately 2 hours loop), taking in coastal headlands, stream crossings, and views across the Firth of Thames.
Tracks are colour-coded and generally well-signed from the car park. Conditions can be muddy after rain — solid footwear is recommended, particularly for the longer coastal tracks.
Camping Options
Tāpapakanga has one of the best camping setups in the Auckland regional park network. Several campgrounds are available, including the popular Beachfront campground (tents only — details on motorhome/caravan suitability on the Auckland Council website), Sāpapakanga Stream, Kaparanui, and Waikaha Stream sites.
Facilities across the campgrounds include toilet blocks, gas BBQs and drinkable water from taps. There is no power supply at any site. Bookings are made through Auckland Council — advance booking is strongly recommended for school holidays and summer weekends, as the beachfront sites fill quickly.
What Visitors Say
“The beachfront campsite is special — you literally wake up 20 metres from the water with pohutukawa right above you. The drive is long but worth it. The coastal walk gives great views across the Firth. One of the best regional park campgrounds in Auckland.”
“We did the Historic Loop with the kids — about half an hour, very easy, and you get to see the old homestead which is interesting. Beach was calm enough to swim at high tide. Quiet park, clearly not as well-known as some others, which suits us.”
