About Tapapakanga Regional Park
Tapapakanga is one of Auckland’s coastal regional parks on the Firth of Thames — a working farm park combining grazing pasture, regenerating native bush and a long stretch of beach. The park’s standout features are the long stony beach (popular for fishing and shellfish gathering), the historic Ashby Homestead, and the small waterfalls along the Whakatīwai Stream that runs through the park. The combination of beach, farm, bush and falls makes it one of the more varied regional parks for a day-out.
The Walks and Waterfalls
Multiple walking tracks loop through Tapapakanga — the Whakatīwai Stream route gives access to the small waterfalls within the park’s bush sections. The falls are modest in size but framed by native bush, giving them a peaceful character. Longer walking options take in the Tapapakanga Ridge and connecting paths through the wider park; allow 2–3 hours for the loops including the falls and bush sections.
Combining With the Coast
Tapapakanga sits on the road to the Pohutukawa Coast and Kaiaua — easy to combine with a stop at Kaiaua for fish and chips on the way back, or extending the drive south to the Hauraki Plains and the Pukorokoro Miranda Shorebird Centre (one of NZ’s most significant wading-bird sites). The park’s campground gives the option for an overnight stay.
