Cycling the Orewa Estuary Walkway: A Family Loop Around Te Ara Tahuna

The Ōrewa Estuary Walkway — officially Te Ara Tahuna — is a 7.5km sealed loop around the Ōrewa estuary on Auckland’s Hibiscus Coast, about 45 minutes north of the city. It’s flat, wide, family-friendly, and one of the best easy cycling loops in the northern Auckland region. The path circles the estuary with open water on one side and Millwater and Ōrewa township on the other, with toilets, a playground, and cafes built into the experience.

The Route

The loop begins and ends at the Western Reserve car park on Hibiscus Coast Highway. The wide sealed path circles the estuary, with views across the water for most of the route. The path is flat throughout, making it suitable for riders of any ability, including families with young children and those on scooters or prams.

The Millwater section of the loop passes through the newer residential precinct beside the estuary, where there are cafes with outdoor seating — a natural stop point mid-ride. Public artwork is dotted along the path.

Facilities and Add-ons

A playground and sports field sit adjacent to the path at the reserve, and a skate park is close by. The combination of a manageable loop, good facilities, and food options makes this a full family outing rather than just a ride — and one of the more complete cycling experiences in the greater Auckland region.
