About Parnell
Parnell is one of Auckland’s foundational suburbs — established from the 1840s and now carrying one of the country’s highest concentrations of preserved Victorian and Edwardian heritage architecture. The Parnell Road commercial spine combines high-end fashion, design, art galleries and restaurants in heritage buildings, with the residential streets behind dominated by restored heritage houses and Edwardian mansions overlooking the harbour. The suburb’s heritage character has been protected through extensive Auckland Council controls.
Parnell Road and the Village
Parnell Road through the suburb is one of Auckland’s most distinctive heritage commercial strips — preserved Victorian and Edwardian buildings housing fashion boutiques, art galleries (Parnell has long been a centre for the Auckland art scene), restaurants and cafes. The strip extends from the Anglican Holy Trinity Cathedral end through to the Parnell Rise overlooking the harbour. La Cigale French Markets on Saturdays and Sundays at the eastern end is a long-running French-themed market with food, wine and produce stalls.
Cultural Anchors
Parnell hosts several of Auckland’s major cultural institutions: Auckland War Memorial Museum on the eastern edge of the Auckland Domain (housing the country’s pre-eminent Māori and Pacific collections plus natural history and WWI/WWII memorials); Holy Trinity Cathedral (the Anglican cathedral on Parnell Road); the historic Kinder House; and the Parnell Rose Gardens on Gladstone Road (long-established formal rose garden with city views).
