Ōrākei Auckland: Bastion Point, Harbourside Living and Ngāti Whātua Heritage

Five kilometres east of Auckland’s city centre, Ōrākei occupies a coastal peninsula where the Waitematā Harbour narrows and the city skyline is always in view. It’s a suburb of two very distinct registers: some of Auckland’s most expensive real estate sits alongside Takaparawhau / Bastion Point, one of New Zealand’s most significant sites of Māori land rights and resistance. Whether you’re here for the harbour walks, the history, or simply to understand the shape of the city, Ōrākei rewards a visit.

About Ōrākei

Ōrākei takes its name from an ancestral settlement of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, the iwi whose rohe (tribal area) covers much of the Auckland isthmus. The suburb’s foreshore and headland have been home to Ngāti Whātua for centuries, and that history is most powerfully expressed at Takaparawhau / Bastion Point.

Bastion Point is a prominent headland with extraordinary views across the Waitematā Harbour to the CBD and the Waitākere Ranges. It is best known as the site of a 506-day land occupation (1977–78) by Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, protesting the confiscation and planned sale of their ancestral land. The protest ended when police and army moved in to remove occupiers — but eventually the land was returned to Ngāti Whātua, making it one of the most significant landmarks of the modern Māori land rights movement. The Michael Joseph Savage Memorial — a tribute to New Zealand’s first Labour Prime Minister — sits at the top of the point.

Below the headland, Okahu Bay has a small sandy beach along Tamaki Drive, popular in summer. The Ōrākei Basin — a sheltered tidal lagoon — wraps around the suburb’s southern side, with a flat walking and cycling path around its perimeter that’s good for families and easy walks.

What’s Nearby

Tamaki Drive runs along the Waitematā Harbour foreshore from the city toward Mission Bay, Saint Heliers, and Glendowie, all of which have beaches and cafés. Hobson Bay is directly to the west, and the Ōrākei Basin walking track connects to the wider eastern bays cycling network. The suburb’s train station is on the Eastern Line, a short ride from Britomart.
