Bethells Beach — known by its Māori name Te Henga — is a wild west coast beach in the Waitākere Ranges, with black volcanic sand, towering dunes, the freshwater Lake Wainamu just behind, and a dramatic open Tasman Sea outlook. Less developed than Piha or Karekare, Bethells rewards visitors with one of Auckland’s most cinematic landscapes — the dunes alone have featured in many films and ad shoots.

About Te Henga / Bethells
Te Henga — Bethells Beach — sits on the western edge of the Waitākere Ranges, accessed by Te Henga Road through farmland and bush from the Henderson Valley. The beach is a long open black-sand stretch with the Waitākere River mouth at the southern end, the towering Erangi Point at the northern end, and a series of dramatic black-sand dunes behind. The Māori name Te Henga refers to the curving shape of the beach. Less developed than Piha or Karekare — no village, no shops — the beach has a wild, untouched quality that’s been used as a film location for many local and international productions.
Swimming Safety
Bethells, like Piha and Karekare, sits on the open Tasman Sea — powerful swells, strong rip currents and rapidly changing sandbar conditions make it one of the most dangerous swimming beaches in Auckland. Always swim between the red and yellow flags when the Bethells Surf Life Saving Club is patrolling in summer. Outside the flags is dangerous and outside patrol hours/season swimming is not recommended unless you’re a strong, experienced surf swimmer who understands rip currents. The Waitākere River mouth at the southern end can be particularly dangerous due to currents from the river meeting the sea.
Lake Wainamu and the Dunes
One of the defining features of Bethells is the proximity of Lake Wainamu — a freshwater dune lake about a 15-minute walk behind the beach through the towering black-sand dunes. Lake Wainamu is one of Auckland’s most spectacular and accessible swimming alternatives to the surf beach — fresh water, sheltered, sandy bottom, and surrounded by the same dramatic black-sand dunes. Many visitors do both — surf and dunes at Bethells, swim and picnic at Wainamu. The walk through the dunes is itself a highlight; the dunes are sometimes called “the Sahara of the west coast” for their scale.
