About Cascade Kauri

The Cascade Kauri area of the Waitākere Ranges is one of the few accessible spots in Auckland where you can walk among mature, ancient kauri trees — the largest tree species in New Zealand. The area takes its name from the cascades along the Waitākere River and the substantial kauri stand in the surrounding forest. Walking tracks loop through the kauri forest, with side tracks reaching the river and its swimming pools. The combination of swimming and walking among ancient kauri is unique within easy reach of Auckland.

Walking to the Pools

From the Cascade Kauri car park on Falls Road, the Cascade Track follows the river downstream — well-formed track suitable for families. The first reasonable swimming pool is about 15 minutes in; longer walking reaches additional, less-busy pools. The river forms multiple small clear pools at different points where the water has carved into the bedrock. Best swimming when river levels are moderate — too high after heavy rain (silty, fast), too low in dry summer periods (shallow). Spring and early summer typically give the best conditions.

Kauri-Dieback Hygiene

Cascade Kauri sits at the heart of one of the largest remaining mature kauri stands in the Waitākere Ranges — the area is therefore critical kauri-dieback territory. Phytophthora agathidicida (the pathogen causing kauri dieback) has devastated kauri populations across the Waitākeres, and the Cascade Kauri stand is protected by extensive hygiene stations and boardwalk infrastructure. Use the cleaning stations at every entry, scrub all soil from boot soles, and stay on the formed track and boardwalk throughout — never step off into the kauri root zones. Dogs not permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I park?
Cascade Kauri car park on Falls Road, signposted from Scenic Drive.

How long is the walk?
About 15 minutes to the first swimming pool; longer to reach less-visited pools further downstream.

Is the water safe to swim in?
Generally yes when water is clear. Avoid swimming after heavy rain or in dry summer when levels drop.

Why is kauri-dieback hygiene so important here?
Cascade Kauri sits at the heart of one of the largest remaining mature kauri stands in the Waitākeres. Any pathogen spread here threatens trees hundreds of years old.

Are dogs allowed?
No — not permitted anywhere in the Waitākere Ranges for biosecurity reasons.

Can I see the kauri trees up close?
Yes — the surrounding tracks pass directly through the kauri stand, with boardwalk and viewing platforms designed to keep walkers safely away from root zones.
