About the Karamatura Stream
The Karamatura Stream drains the southern slopes of the Waitākere Ranges and runs through the Karamatura Valley before joining the Huia Stream and ultimately the Manukau Harbour. Sections of the stream form natural swimming pools where the water has carved into the bedrock — small but deep enough to swim, clear, and surrounded by mature native rainforest including ferns, nikau palms and rimu. The Karamatura Loop Walk follows the stream up the valley, with the swimming pools accessible at various points along the route.
The Walk and Pools
From the Huia Campground car park, the Karamatura Loop Walk follows the stream upstream through native bush — a well-formed track with bridges over the stream at several points. The first decent swimming pool is about 20–30 minutes in; longer walking finds more secluded pools further up the valley. The full loop is around 2–3 hours return depending on which pools you stop at. Don’t swim alone in remote pools — even small pools can have currents during periods of higher flow.
Kauri-Dieback Hygiene
The Waitākere Ranges have been heavily affected by kauri dieback disease (Phytophthora agathidicida), and many tracks were closed under a rāhui placed in 2018. Karamatura tracks have re-opened with new track upgrades and mandatory hygiene station use. Clean all soil from boot soles at the cleaning stations and stay on the formed track throughout. Dogs are not permitted in the Waitākere Ranges for the same biosecurity reason.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the swimming pools?
Along the Karamatura Stream, accessed via the Karamatura Loop Walk from the Huia Campground car park.
How far is the walk?
About 20–30 minutes to the first swimming pool; the full loop is 2–3 hours return.
Is the water clean enough to swim?
Generally yes — clear bush-fed water. Avoid swimming after heavy rain (water carries sediment and possible runoff).
Are dogs allowed?
No — dogs are not permitted in the Waitākere Ranges due to kauri-dieback biosecurity.
Do I need to use a cleaning station?
Yes — mandatory at all Waitākere Ranges track entries to prevent kauri dieback spread.
Is it suitable for families?
Yes for the first pool — well-formed track, moderate walking. Longer pools and deeper sections require more confident walkers and swimmers.
