About Hillsborough

Hillsborough occupies elevated ground overlooking the northern shore of the Manukau Harbour. The suburb is characterised by established residential streets, mature trees and pockets of open space that take advantage of the ridge-top setting.

From many points there are views across the harbour and toward volcanic cones further inland. The area developed largely as suburban housing after the break-up of large nineteenth-century estates, giving it a consistent mid-twentieth-century residential feel.

Traditional Māori associations with the wider isthmus include Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. The south-eastern coastal zone near the harbour was known as Rangiaowhia, linked to a settlement and waka landing place. The high point of the ridge is associated with the name Pukekāroro.

The northern part of the modern suburb was known as Koheraunui, a reference to kohekohe trees once common in the lava-forest landscape and an area noted for kūmara cultivation.

In the 1830s the Tainui leader Pōtatau Te Wherowhero spent time at Koheraunui (in the vicinity of present-day Monte Cecilia) before later settling at coastal Māngere. Land in the area was later sold with the consent of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei leadership.

The English name Hillsborough commemorates James Carlton Hill, who left land for public domains in his will. A defining feature of the suburb is the former Pah Farm estate. The Italianate Pah Homestead was built for merchant James Williamson to designs by Edward Mahoney.

The house and grounds later passed through Catholic ownership (when the property was known as Monte Cecilia) before Auckland Council acquired the homestead and surrounding land for public park use. Today the homestead operates as an art gallery within Monte Cecilia Park, and the park itself is a major open-space asset for the local board area.

Hillsborough Cemetery occupies a ridge overlooking the harbour and is one of Auckland’s older cemeteries. It is linked into the wider coastal reserve network. The Waikōwhai Walkway provides a multi-kilometre coastal route connecting Onehunga with Lynfield Cove and passes through or beside Hillsborough’s shoreline reserves.

Together these places give the suburb a clear identity as a residential area with strong heritage and harbour connections rather than a commercial hub of its own.

History and Heritage

European subdivision of the large Pah estate after the late nineteenth century shaped much of the modern street pattern. Facilities that appeared on former estate land included a Franciscan friary, Marcellin College, and other institutional and residential uses.

The Pah Homestead is listed by Heritage New Zealand as a Category 1 historic place. It is valued for its architecture, designed landscape associations and links to early Auckland business figures. Monte Cecilia Park preserves significant trees, open lawns and views that relate to the former estate setting.

Hillsborough Cemetery was established to serve the growing southern isthmus and was used extensively through the mid-twentieth century. Its hillside location and harbour outlook make it both a place of remembrance and a distinctive landscape feature.

Dual naming of local parks under the Puketāpapa Local Board has restored traditional names such as Puke-karoro alongside Hillsborough Reserve, reflecting ongoing recognition of Māori place names in the area.

Getting Outdoors

Monte Cecilia Park offers lawns, mature exotic and native trees, paths and elevated views toward One Tree Hill and the Manukau Harbour. The Pah Homestead within the park hosts changing art exhibitions.

Along the harbour edge, esplanade reserves and bays such as Grannys Bay and Taylors Bay form part of a steep, vegetated coastline with sections of boardwalk and walking access.

The Waikōwhai Walkway ties these coastal spaces into a longer route suitable for walking. Hillsborough Cemetery and adjoining reserve land add further quiet green space with harbour outlooks. Conditions on coastal paths can be affected by erosion and weather; check local notices for any temporary closures.

Getting Around

Hillsborough Road is the principal spine through the suburb, with Queenstown Road and other local streets providing connections toward Onehunga, Three Kings and Mount Roskill. Bus routes serve the area and link to larger centres and the city. Onehunga’s train station and broader bus network offer onward travel options.

The suburb’s ridge-and-gully topography means some streets are steep, which is worth noting for walking or cycling. Parking is generally on-street in residential areas; dedicated parking is available at key destinations such as Monte Cecilia Park and the cemetery.
