Onehunga is one of Auckland’s foundational suburbs — established as a military settlement in the 1840s and growing into the main commercial centre serving the Manukau Harbour by the late 19th century.
The harbour-side position made Onehunga the centre of inter-island shipping into Auckland before the rail era, and the legacy is visible in the heritage commercial buildings along Onehunga Mall.
