About One Tree Hill
One Tree Hill takes its English name from Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill — the volcanic cone at its heart, formed by an eruption around 67,000 years ago. The 182 m summit was the site of an important pre-European Māori pā (Maungakiekie was one of the largest pā on the Auckland isthmus), with terraced earthworks still visible. The English name refers to the single pōhutukawa that historically stood on the summit; that tree was felled in protest in 1994, with a new replacement grove planted by the Cornwall Park Trust in 2016.
Cornwall Park and the Monument
The volcanic cone sits within Cornwall Park — 220+ hectares of pastoral parkland gifted to the people of Auckland by Sir John Logan Campbell in 1901. The park includes the obelisk monument on the summit (commemorating Sir John, the founder of Auckland), Acacia Cottage (Auckland’s oldest surviving European-era building), the Cornwall Park Restaurant and Information Centre, plus extensive walking paths through mature oak and olive plantings and grazing pasture with sheep and cattle.
The Summit Drive and Walking Tracks
Vehicle access to the summit is via the Twin Oak Drive entrance from Manukau Road — the summit road climbs through the park to a viewpoint with 360° city panoramas. Walking tracks loop through the park at multiple levels, with the summit walk popular at sunrise and sunset for the views. The Cornwall Park Restaurant in the historic Acacia Cottage area handles post-walk coffee and lunches.
