Daniel Schellenberg Barrister: Criminal Defence Lawyers in Auckland

Daniel Schellenberg Barrister is an Auckland criminal defence practice representing people facing criminal investigations, charges and appeals throughout New Zealand. Based on High Street in Auckland’s city centre, we provide practical advice and carefully prepared representation, from the first contact with Police through to trial, sentencing and beyond.

Criminal proceedings can put your freedom, livelihood and family life under pressure. Our role is to help you understand your position, make informed decisions and have your case properly heard. We take the time to explain the allegations, examine the evidence and work through the options available to you. You can expect direct communication, discretion and respectful treatment throughout the process.

Specialist Criminal Defence Experience Since 2010

Daniel Schellenberg has practised exclusively in criminal defence since his admission to the bar in 2010. After completing his law degree at the University of Otago, he began his career with the Public Defence Service before joining Vulcan Chambers in 2012. In 2019, he established his own chambers in the Southern Cross Building in central Auckland.

Today, Daniel leads a team of criminal defence barristers whose backgrounds include criminal justice, community law and international legal work. His practice draws on extensive experience conducting jury trials and appeals, with a strong focus on preparation and courtroom advocacy. Each case receives attention to its individual facts and the circumstances of the person involved.

Representation Across a Wide Range of Criminal Charges

Our criminal defence services cover allegations ranging from lower-level offending to serious and complex prosecutions. We represent clients facing murder and manslaughter charges, serious violence, aggravated robbery, kidnapping, firearms offences and regulatory charges.

We also defend allegations involving drug supply, manufacture and importation, sexual offending, family violence and fraud. The work involves looking closely at the prosecution’s evidence, identifying matters that need to be challenged and preparing a defence suited to the case.

Our representation includes jury and judge-alone trials, applications concerning the admissibility of evidence, bail applications and sentencing. Where appropriate, we can also assess options involving Police diversion or an application for discharge without conviction. We explain the available pathways so clients understand the purpose of each step and the decisions ahead.

Support Throughout the Criminal Justice Process

We provide urgent legal advice during Police investigations, questioning and arrest, alongside ongoing representation through court proceedings. Our work also includes criminal appeals and Parole Board matters. We accept private instructions and offer Legal Aid representation for eligible clients, subject to the applicable approval and assignment requirements.

Our recent cases reflect experience across defended trials, evidence challenges, negotiated resolutions and sentencing. Throughout this work, our focus remains on thorough preparation, clear advice and presenting each client’s position effectively.
