About Karioitahi Surfcasting
Karioitahi sits on the south side of the Manukau Heads on the Awhitu Peninsula — a long Tasman Sea black-sand beach with consistent inshore fish populations and very little fishing pressure. The strong west-coast swell creates classic surf-fishing conditions when manageable, but the conditions deserve respect; powerful sets can move sand bars and rip currents rapidly. The black sand absorbs heat — wear shoes in summer.
What You’ll Catch
Snapper come close to the beach through spring spawning runs and autumn. Kahawai are reliable year-round. Gurnard work the deeper sand. Rig (school shark) are popular night surfcasting targets. Kingfish occasionally patrol the rocks at the northern end. Standard surfcasting setups work — heavier sinkers for windy west-coast conditions.
Safety
This is open Tasman Sea — strong rip currents, powerful swells, rapid condition changes. Check the marine forecast before going; avoid in heavy swells. The rocks at the northern end demand rock-fishing safety precautions (lifejacket, never fish alone). The Awhitu Lighthouse stands above the northern end as a navigational reminder of how exposed this coast is.
