A corner taco ramp, a bridge and two sizes of half pipe set the Ōrewa Skatepark apart from the usual suburban slab.
The park sits in Western Reserve beside the Ōrewa estuary, off Hibiscus Coast Highway on the Hibiscus Coast north of Auckland. It was largely rebuilt over the old skatepark in late 2015, after local skaters worked with council parks staff and the Hibiscus and Bays Local Board on the design.
Auckland Council describes it as well designed and suited to skateboarders, scooters and bikers of all ages and abilities. There is a basketball court right next to it, and toilets in the reserve.

About Ōrewa Skatepark
By 2014 the original Ōrewa skatepark was 17 years old, and in November that year its ramp and half pipe were closed because of their condition. The Hibiscus and Bays Local Board put the park up for renewal, and in mid-2015 a design-and-build contract worth $350,100 went to Landscapes Contrax.
The layout came from a working group of local skaters, local board members and Auckland Council’s parks team. They wanted mostly concrete construction that would work for boards, scooters and bikes, with room to sit and watch as well as ride.
The rebuilt park opened just in time for summer 2015, and the council’s news story at the time called it one of the best designed skate parks in New Zealand.
Some small touches came from reuse: recycled materials were turned into seating and a sculpture for hanging bags and jackets. The park was also built with a hang-out area and a judging area for competitions.
Ramp by Ramp
Transition
The two half pipes, one large and one medium, are the centrepiece. Turn-around quarter pipes let riders come back the way they came, and the hipped corner and corner taco ramp give riders corners to carve.
Street and flow
Rails and ledges cover the street side, while a pump bump, a manual pad and a bridge add flow between sections. Newer riders can stick to the pump bump and manual pad while they find their feet.
Around Western Reserve
Western Reserve is a large open space a few minutes from Ōrewa Beach. Te Ara Tahuna, the Ōrewa Estuary Path, loops around the estuary from here, and the Ōrewa Beachfront Path runs from the southern end of the reserve to Arundel Reserve.
The Estuary Arts Centre, Hibiscus Coast Youth Centre and several clubs also share the reserve, and there is a wharf, seating and picnic tables.
