Skaters know it as the Len Brown Skatepark, after the former mayor who grew up in Ōtara. Ōtara Skatepark is on Bairds Road in Ōtara, South Auckland, and its big draw is a large concrete bowl ringed with obstacles.
Ledges, quarter pipes and hips wrap around the outside, and a street section adds rails, stairs and more ledges. There’s also a smaller bowl that suits beginners. The park has also had a renewal, with concrete repairs and a couple of new features.

About Ōtara Skatepark
The park’s nickname comes from Len Brown, who was Mayor of Manukau City from 2007 and then the first mayor of the amalgamated Auckland from 2010 to 2016. His family moved to Ōtara when he was seven. Skate Finder says he backed the skatepark as part of a wider effort to revive the Ōtara town centre.
The bowl is what sets it apart. A rider guide on Skateboard.com.au sums it up as a “huge bowl with obstacles all around the outside”, listing ledges, extra bowls, quarter pipes and hips.
Skate Finder describes the same large concrete bowl alongside a street section with rails, stairs and ledges, plus a mini ramp and a smaller bowl for newer skaters. It also notes the park has hosted local and national competitions.
More recently the park has been through a renewal. East Skate Club’s project page for the Stage 1 work lists concrete grinding, crack repair, a new manual pad and the removal of a funbox, replaced with an A-frame. Its photos show crews at work on fresh concrete, with logos for Citycare Property, the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board and Weerd Van Skatepark Solutions.
Getting the Most from the Bowl
New riders
Start in the smaller bowl. Skate Finder singles it out as the beginner-friendly part of the park.
Confident riders
The main bowl, with hips and quarter pipes around its rim, is built for carving lines. Street skaters have the rails, stairs, ledges and the new manual pad and A-frame to work with.
Nearby Skateparks
South Auckland has plenty of concrete within a short ride. Skateboard.com.au lists Allenby Skatepark about 2 km south and Barry Curtis Skatepark about 3 km east, so it’s easy to string together a session across several parks.
