Tōtara Park Mountain Bike Tracks Auckland: 18 Tracks Through Bush and Paddock

Last updated October 2026

Eighteen mountain bike tracks fill the north-eastern section of Tōtara Park, a 216 ha council park, and Auckland Council says they suit a wide range of abilities. The Tōtara Park mountain bike tracks are reached from the Redoubt Road entrance, where the council says to park.

The council grades seven of them, from easy trails such as the Kids’ Loop and Pony Express to the intermediate Challenger and the advanced Gutsa. Volunteers from the Totara Park Mountain Bike Club maintain and improve the network, and the tracks run through bush, across paddocks and beside the Puhinui Stream, with a connection to the Auckland Botanic Gardens.

About Tōtara Park Mountain Bike Tracks

Tōtara Park covers 216 ha, and OurAuckland describes it as one of Auckland’s largest destination parks: rolling hills grazed by sheep and cattle, with bush of kauri, puriri, tōtara and nīkau. The mountain bike network sits in the park’s north-eastern section.

The tracks are shared and varied. The council’s 2023 story says they run through the bush, across paddock areas and alongside the Puhinui Stream, and connect to the Auckland Botanic Gardens to the south-west.

The trails are a volunteer effort. Members of the Totara Park Mountain Bike Club give large numbers of hours to maintain and improve the tracks, and the club and the Manurewa Local Board have signed a memorandum of understanding to develop quality biking facilities in the park. The article says the club wants a network suited to a range of ages, skill levels and fitness.

Trail Grades

The council gives grades for seven of the 18 tracks:

Easy

Fatman’s Revenge, Pony Express, Kids’ Loop, Scrubber and Anaconda.

Intermediate

Challenger.

Advanced

Gutsa.

The other eleven, from Zebzag and Rewa Hard to Puhinui Flow and Sunset Boulevard, are listed without a grade, so ask the club before you commit to one.

Where the Tracks Lead

The network does not stop at the park’s edge. OurAuckland reports that the tracks run beside the Puhinui Stream and connect to the Auckland Botanic Gardens to the south-west. Check the gardens’ own rules on bikes before you ride into them.
