About Wainamu Falls
Wainamu Falls is a less-visited waterfall above Lake Wainamu — most visitors to the area walk in to the lake from Bethells Road, swim and turn back, never venturing further. The track continues past the lake along the Wainamu Stream, climbing gradually into the bush until reaching the falls. The setting is genuinely remote-feeling — surrounded by native bush, far from any road, with the Wainamu Stream and waterfall as the only sound.
The Walk Beyond the Lake
From the Bethells Road car park, the track follows the route to Lake Wainamu through the dramatic black-sand dunes — about 15 minutes. Most visitors stop at the lake. To continue to the falls, follow the track around the lake’s eastern shore, then up the Wainamu Stream valley through native bush. The walk to the falls is around 45–60 minutes total from the car park. Allow 2–3 hours return total. The combination of dunes, lake and bush walking makes this one of the more varied Waitākere walks.
Kauri-Dieback Hygiene
Standard Waitākere Ranges biosecurity applies — use the cleaning stations at the trailhead, clean all soil from boot soles, then spray with disinfectant. Stay on the formed track throughout. Dogs are not permitted in the area.
