Titirangi occupies hillside terrain on the southern edge of the Waitākere Ranges, looking toward the Manukau Harbour. Much of the residential area sits among mature native bush, with properties often featuring substantial gardens and bush outlooks. The village centre functions as a local hub for arts, cafes and community activity.
The suburb falls within the Waitākere Ranges Local Board area, which extends from Whatipu and Titirangi in the south to Waitākere and O’Neill Bay in the north. Its combination of bush living, harbour proximity and cultural facilities gives it a character distinct from more urban Auckland suburbs.
Visitors and residents value the lifestyle balance of creative community amenities with direct outdoor access. Walking connections lead into the wider Waitākere Ranges Regional Park network, while French Bay and nearby foreshore areas provide harbour-side recreation.

Entry to Lopdell House and The Upstairs Art Gallery is free. Opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 10am to 4.30pm (closed public holidays), with the theatre and gallery open later for evening shows. The facility is wheelchair accessible with accessible parking nearby, reserved theatre seating and a hearing loop. Assistance animals are welcome.
Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery includes a learning centre offering art projects for children during term time and school holidays. The Upstairs Art Gallery promotes local arts and hosts up to 12 exhibitions per year.
McCahon House is the former home of Colin McCahon (1919–1987), one of New Zealand’s most significant 20th-century painters. He lived there with his family from 1953 to 1960.
The house at 67 Otitori Bay Road, French Bay, Titirangi, is now a museum dedicated to the artist and retains hand-tooled additions made by McCahon. It operates as a bach-style vernacular building set in the coastal foothills. An adjacent artists’ residency supports contemporary practitioners.
The museum is open Saturday and Sunday 1–4pm, and Wednesday to Friday 1–4pm by email appointment (closed public holidays). A suggested donation of $5 per adult applies. Guided tours for groups are available by appointment.
Due to steep terrain and multiple steps, the site is not recommended for people with restricted mobility and has no wheelchair access. Flat footwear and outdoor clothing are advised. Parking is limited on the road verge or at French Bay a short walk away. Buses serve the village and part of Otitori Bay Road.

French Bay, near McCahon House, offers harbour foreshore views and recreation. The area provides a base for exploring nearby Waitākere Ranges destinations such as the Arataki Visitor Centre. The combination of bush, harbour edge and village amenities supports walking, nature observation and relaxed day visits.
Seasonal conditions in the ranges can include wet tracks and variable weather; visitors should check current park advice before longer walks. The bush setting contributes to the suburb’s appeal for those seeking a quieter, greener alternative within easy reach of central Auckland.
