Devonport is one of Auckland’s most distinctive suburbs — a Victorian-era seaside village on the southern tip of the North Shore, opposite the CBD across the Waitematā Harbour. The 12-minute ferry from Britomart to Devonport Wharf is itself one of Auckland’s iconic transport experiences.
The suburb’s residential streets are dominated by restored Victorian and Edwardian timber villas, with the historic Devonport Naval Base on the harbour edge giving the suburb its long-running naval association.

Victoria Road through Devonport is the heritage commercial spine — a sequence of restored Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings housing cafes, restaurants, boutiques and the Devonport Library.
The strip runs from the ferry terminal up to the Mt Victoria base, with the village atmosphere making it a popular weekend visitor destination from the CBD. The Esplanade Hotel (1903) at the ferry terminal anchors the heritage streetscape.
