About Stonefields
Stonefields was created from the late 2000s onwards on the site of a former Winstone quarrying operation that extracted basalt from the slopes of Mt Wellington / Maungarei. After quarrying ceased, the substantial flat-floored site was developed as one of NZ’s largest master-planned residential communities — over 2,000 dwellings designed as a high-density mixed-use community with central village square, walking paths and integrated green spaces. The architectural character is modern terraced housing rather than detached suburban — distinct from the surrounding established Auckland suburbs.
The Former Quarry Setting
The former quarry setting defines Stonefields’ physical character — the development sits within the bowl carved out of Mt Wellington’s eastern flank, with cliff faces from the historic quarrying still visible around the edges. The basalt rock that was extracted here built much of central Auckland’s roading infrastructure through the mid-20th century. Mt Wellington / Maungarei volcanic cone sits immediately above Stonefields, with walking access to the summit from the development.
Family-Focused Design
Stonefields was designed with a strong family demographic in mind — central village square with cafes and convenience retail, primary school within the development, multiple playgrounds, and an integrated cycle/walking network linking the various neighbourhoods. The Stonefields Lake and Pavilion at the centre is the community focal point. The development’s density and design has made it popular with younger families wanting a more urban village feel than typical suburban Auckland.
