Hauraki is a small residential suburb — established streets of weatherboard villas and bungalows mixed with newer infill housing. The suburb’s appeal is largely from its proximity to Takapuna — walking distance to the Takapuna village commercial centre, Takapuna Beach and the Sunday Markets — combined with a quieter residential character than Takapuna itself.

Hauraki residents have full Takapuna village amenities within walking distance: major retail and supermarkets, the Takapuna Beach foreshore, the Sunday Markets, cafes and restaurants. Lake Pupuke sits immediately to the west of Hauraki — Auckland’s only sizeable urban freshwater lake, with walking paths around the perimeter and summer swimming.
The combination of beach access (Takapuna Beach 10-min walk), lake access (Lake Pupuke 5-min walk) and village amenities is rare for an inner Auckland suburb.
