About Mount Wellington
Mount Wellington takes its name from the prominent scoria cone Maungarei / Mount Wellington, one of Auckland’s 14 Tūpuna Maunga (ancestral mountains).
The maunga is the largest of Auckland’s scoria cones and the youngest onshore volcano in the Auckland volcanic field. Its near-circular base, flattish rim and three overlapping craters dominate the local skyline. Lava flows from the eruption shaped surrounding land, including areas later quarried and now partly redeveloped as Stonefields.
Maungarei is commonly understood as “the watchful mountain.” The flanks and crest carry extensive Māori earthworks, terraces and food-storage pits from former pā occupation. Ownership of the Tūpuna Maunga, including this one, was vested in Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau.
